On 1 July 1963 the 18th had its first loss in Vietnam when Capt Curtis J. Steckbauer crashed 58-1706 on takeoff. All passengers and other crew members survived.

Carricarte & crew chief SP4 Michael Peter Martin, Jr. & 4 passengers, headed for Ban Me Thout slammed into a mountain side at 7,400 feet elevation after being hit by ground fire. At first it looked to be an operational accident, but a closer examination of the six the seven bodies showed that they contained foreign metal fragments.

Kenneth B. Sykes
S.16th Street, Center City

Sykes attended John Bartram High School before enlisting in the Army in 1964. The 19-year-old private first class, an aircraft maintenance specialist, died in Vietnam on June 1, 1966, as the result of a non-combat incident in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province. He had been assigned to the 256th Transportation Detachment. ... from The Philadelphia Daily News. 


Approximately 1915 hours (LCL) PFC Kenneth B Sykes, in a leave status was shot and fatally wounded while entering the main gate to Long Van Compound at Nha Trang , RVN. 

Rushed to the hospital where he died at 2020 hours .   Motives for the shooting are not known and the matter was under investigation (status unknown).

PFC Sykes was respected and liked by all members of the 18th Avn Co and 256th Trans Det
