On 12 December 1963 the 18th suffered its first combat loss when Otter (#58-1690) piloted by CPT Clarence L. Moorer, 2LT Louis A. Carricarte & crew chief SP4 Michael Peter Martin, Jr. & 4 passengers, headed for Ban Me Thout slammed into a mountain side at 7,400 feet elevation after being hit by ground fire. At first it looked to be an operational accident, but a closer examination of the six the seven bodies showed that they contained foreign metal fragments.
